Here is some exciting news for teens 14-17. Kaplan International Colleges has announced the opening of a new junior English language school in Edinburgh. Junior English Courses are a fun, memorable, and of course educational way for teens to spend their summer vacation.

The new school in Edinburgh will be open in time for summer and English courses for teenagers will be available between June 23rd  and August 10th. Students taking Kaplan English courses for teenagers here can experience evening activities, day trips, sports, and sightseeing. Sounds like a lot of fun to me. Kaplan’s new Edinburgh junior language school is based on the Napier University campus, just ten minutes from the center of the Scottish capital where students will be able to enjoy world-class festivals and amazing scenery. And, are you ready for this…the campus has its own 12th century castle! Wow! What an amazing experience these junior students will enjoy when they study English in the beautiful and remarkable city of Edinburgh this summer.

According to a spokeswoman for the company, “Edinburgh is a wonderful historic city which has been an extremely popular destination for young English language learners for well over forty years.” Already, Kaplan has been voted ‘best educator in Scotland’ and this reputation for outstanding education and care is now available for 14-17 year olds on all inclusive Junior Programs

In addition to this center, Kaplan is also opening a new junior school in Brighton for Summer 2013 as it expands its junior program in the UK. Existing programs can be found in such destinations as Bath, Bournemouth, London Kingston, Salisbury and Torquay.

Music Lovers are Inspired to Learn English by Rihanna

3-04-English-lesson-Rihanna

Are you a music lover? If so, then maybe you are part of this newly discovered group of music fans. According to new research by Kaplan International Colleges, more people learn English to understand Rihanna than any other musician in the pop music industry. The school surveyed 1,213 people who speak English as a foreign language (EFL) and discovered that more than half (52%) of them learned the language in order to comprehend a celebrity. Among this group of EFL speakers, Rihanna,  the Bajan beauty, who is famous for hit singles such as Diamonds and Rude Boi, was the most inspirational musician and 10% saying the singer inspired them to pick  the language. Kaplan has created the Language of Love Infographic to showcase the results of their survey, so check it out!

The author of Rihanna: Rebel Flower, Chloe Govan, said that, “Music is the universal language, its beats and melodies are reaching out to people no matter what their mother tongue is. Non-native listeners strive to emulate Rihanna’s glamour and talents.” It is natural that fans want to become more like their idols and while Shakespeare was the inspiration centuries ago, Rihanna is the icon of the modern generation.  RiRi, as she is known by her fans,  beat out her chart rivals and fellow pop princesses Katy Perry and Beyonce who inspired 8% and 7% of EFL speakers respectively. The controversial rapper Eminem was the top male musician with 7% of students claiming that they learned English to understand his lyrics.

Accoriding to a spokesman for RihannaDaily.com, “Rihanna is one of the most successful singers worldwide these days, her songs are all over the charts, so it’s just natural that people who do not speak English want to understand what she’s singing.” For the past 8 years, she has released hit after hit and her addictive music features super catchy lyrics that fans can really relate to.

In the non-musical category, US President Barack Obama was the most popular person for inspiring others to learn English. The study found that 22% of EFL speakers who said they learned English to understand a celebrity did so to follow what the US President had to say.

A leading international English language school, Kapalan,  has reached a social media milestone by passing 75,000 fans on their Facebook page. That’s a lot of likes!

The school has seen a strong growth in engagement and the number of fans has rapidly increased since 2010. Just a few short months after reaching the 50,000 fan mark, the company celebrated reaching 75,000 fans this month.

Social media has played a large part in the school’s media mix, especially in 2012 which saw the launch of photo competitions, the Kaplan Journal, and the #KaplanExperience promotion on Instagram, which has created student winners worldwide. Kaplan’s social media team has a lot of activities planned for this year as well, including the Kaplan Talent Awards, which will encourage students from every language school to share their talents and skills with the rest of the world.

A member of their social media team, Ms. Francis, mentioned that they were very happy and grateful to reach 75,000 fans. The school loves speaking to current and prospective students on a daily basis, and so they have worked hard to create a social experience online just for them. The keys are sharing and creating content as well as providing information that they find engaging and useful.

In addition, students taking Kaplan English language courses can discover individual Facebook account for each of their schools and countries in multiple languages, bringing the total number of fans to more than 200,000. Each page aims to engage with students and Kaplan alumni, as well as those who are interested in traveling and learning English. Does your school use social media to communicate with students?

Sharing Student Experiences Physically Around The World!

3-01-English-lesson-Experience- Journal

In this digital world of tweets and Facebook posts, Kaplan International Colleges, has taken a retro approach to sharing information. They have announced the launch of a new and nostalgic way for students to share their memories, the Kaplan Experience Journal. This will be a fun and vintage way for the students to document their experience and share it with their fellow students worldwide.

The Kaplan Experience Journal is an actual physical scrapbook, making its way around the world via several Kaplan English language schools. In order to give their students an opportunity to share their learning experience, the journal is slated to be shared in their English language schools across seven countries and three continents.

Each school will be completing two pages of the Journal with their own personal messages, from special memories they have of Kaplan, to memorabilia from a social activity. Once they have filled out the journal, they will then pass it on to the next school for them to repeat the process. What a fabulous way to document the international learning experience!

At the Kaplan English school in London, Russian student Alisa and Venezuelan student Karla started the Journal on its international journey with their contributions about their experiences. Its final destination will be at Kaplan’s Auckland school in New Zealand.

A spokesperson for the school said that their hope is the journal will create a sense of excitement among their students, and as well, build stronger connections and communities within the global Kaplan International network. There has been a great deal of enthusiasm about the project and they are excited to see the finished result. You can get updates about the Journal’s progress on the school’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. What an awesome idea!
