Both recommend & suggest have a similar meaning and grammar structure. Let’s have a look at these words & patterns today today.

Be careful of this common mistake. Recommend and suggest are not followed by a direct object pronoun (like me, him, us, etc) or the infinitive form of the verb. So these two patterns don’t work:

  • The waiter recommended me the grilled salmon.
  • If you want to see a great view in NYC, I recommend to visit Top of the Rock.

Here are the three patterns that you can use:

Pattern #1 – Recommend/Suggest + Noun

  • The waiter recommended the grilled salmon.
  • When I was shopping for a camera, the salesman suggested a Canon camera.
  • If you want to see a great view in NYC, I recommend Top of the Rock.

Pattern #2 – Recommend/Suggest + Gerund

  • The waiter recommended trying the grilled salmon.
  • When I was shopping for a camera, the salesman suggested buying a Canon camera.
  • If you want to see a great view in NYC, I recommend visiting Top of the Rock.

Pattern #3 – Recommend/Suggest + Subject + Base Verb. In this pattern, we use the subjunctive form of the verb, which is essentially the base form of the verb. I’ll cover that in detail in another lesson soon.

  • The waiter recommended I order the grilled salmon.
  • When I was shopping for a camera, the salesman suggested I buy a Canon camera.
  • If you want to see a great view in NYC, I recommend you visit Top of the Rock.
